The king sundew, Drosera regia, has a very uncanny ability to wrap its leaves around captured insects. In some instances, a leaf will wrap around an insect so perfectly it looks like it wrapped itself into a knot! Some say that the king sundew gets its name from its spear-like leaves that form a crown of sorts. Others say that its name comes its size.

Big Easy is a registered cultivar. It has broader leaves than the typical variety. Even though it doesn't get as tall as the typical variety, Big Easy makes up for it in robust growth and clumping.

This plant can be a bit of an enigma for some growers. We've found that it's not very tolerant of constant high temperatures. It definitely likes cool nights, like in its native habit in the coastal mountains of South Africa. It grows best in regions where night temperatures drop below 70°F at night.

Natural Habitat:
Coastal mountains of South Africa.
Type of Plant:
Tropical perennial.
Size of Adult Plants:

Leaves can reach 9 inches.
A rare cultivar of a rare sundew. Difficult to find in cultivation.

Your plant will arrive in a 4-inch pot. Leaves are approximately 6 inches tall. It will reach maturity in 1-2 years and continue to grow.

Watch this month's video podcast for examples of how your plant may look at this time of the year.

Sunlight:
Partial to full sun with mild temperatures. A south window with several hours of direct sunlight is ideal. This plant can take the heat.
Water:
Use low mineral water. Keep the soil wet by setting the plant in a dish of standing water.
Cold Tolerance:

Requires cool, comfortable night temperatures, but protect from frost.

    Never stopped growing

Although the newer leaves are smaller than the ones it came with. It has not stopped growing. It came in very healthy, but because of my lower humidity the newer leaves are a little shorter. Still catching insects non stop.

    Drosera Regia 'Big Easy'

Posted by Jeff Stillman on March 25, 2014

I was absolutely amazed how big and healthy this plant was. I've bought King Sundews before from other venders and never receive a plant even close to the size and health of the Sarracenia Northwest Kings. I would not hesitate for a second to buy from them again. Way beyond my expectations.
