This flytrap features red leaves and traps. Young plants are bright red throughout. As the plant matures, it turns maroon with a green margin along the edge of the traps. Despite its attractive red leaves, this particular variety is temperamental. It dislikes root disturbance, and it dislikes excessive heat. (Other varieties of flytraps are much more resilient.) In winter, it will also drop all of its leaves, leaving nothing to show. The Red Dragon Flytrap is best for growers who have experience growing the more typical variety.

Type of Plant: Outdoor perennial for container growing.
Height: Up to 4 inches at maturity.
Sunlight: Full sun during the growing season. (The Red Dragon Flytrap likes full sun but dislikes excessive heat. So it's most suitable to regions with sunny yet moderate summers.)
Water: Low-mineral water (50 ppm or less).
Soil: Equal parts peat moss and perlite only.
Winter: Dormant. Minimal protection in USDA zones 7-9. Mulch in colder regions.

The first one I received had some transport stress and didn’t survive, and they sent me another one to replace it! So happy that they took the time to make it right

    Venus Flytrap Question

Posted by Max on August 21, 2023

I ordered the King Henry and the Red Dragon, they arrived about 4 days later. Nice and healthy. I have a question about watering them, can I keep they in a trey of distilled water at all times or just for a couple hours every other 2 to 3 days?

This is probably one of y favorite flytraps I have owned. It's been doing so well the past several weeks and is catching something every other day. This flytrap adds such a nice pop of color in my bog garden and I am so happy to have it!

    It died

Posted by Kimberly Livingston on August 3, 2023

I read the care instructions. I had it inside my home in a bright window for about a week thinking I needed to acclimate it back to the outside since it had been in a box. It didn't look good after a few days, so I put it outside in direct sunlight and made sure the soil stayed moist. It continued to die. I tried to contact someone through your website, but never received a helpful response. It was my first try at such a plant. I won't be ordering another one from this company. *** RESPONSE BY SARRACENIA NORTHWEST *** I'm so sorry to hear about your flytrap. I reviewed your messages. I know you tried to use the message system in your account, but those messages don't go to the grower who answers growing questions nor does it allow customers to upload photos. This is why we strongly recommend growers to submit their questions to Ask The Growers instead. I reviewed the question you later submitted to Ask The Growers. You mentioned that you placed your plant indoors for a week and it started to not "look good," so you placed it outside in direct sunlight (in Texas). I agree with Jeff's response; your plant became acclimated to your home in low light conditions and was suddenly thrust into scorching hot weather in your region. Our plants are already acclimated to outdoor weather and may be placed outdoors upon receipt. As long as customers are willing to follow our instructions from the start, we are willing to guarantee the health of our plants for 30 days. That's all we ask. Jeff also had a questions regarding your growing conditions, but he never received a follow-up response from you. I'm sorry it hasn't worked out for you. I wish you only the best. --Jacob Farin

    Is this normal?

Posted by Lydia on July 7, 2023

I ordered a four-pack of various flytraps not long ago. When I received them, all were dormant. Now that time went by, this is the only one that seems to not grow but it does look alive though (dark maroon color - darker than the picture shows). I don't know what is happening with it. The other three flytraps are looking green and vibrant. All of these are outside and in distilled water. I have given this flytrap an average score because it is not vibrant like the other three flytraps are. Is there a different type of care for the DIONAEA MUSCIPULA RED DRAGON FLYTRAP? The other three flytraps get a perfect score! *** RESPONSE BY SARRACENIA NORTHWEST *** Thank you for your purchase. I'm glad that the flytraps are growing well for you. I'm not sure what you mean that it seems not to grow. Based on your description, it sounds like it is alive. Red Dragon will often be dark red when grown in full sun. They are not supposed to be green. Without seeing the plant or knowing your actual growing conditions, I can't comment more about it. We would be glad to assist you. Please submit your question to Ask The Growers. You can also upload up to three photos.

    Dionaea muscipula Red Dragon Flytrap

The plant arrived in excellent condition (as usual). After about 2 weeks traps began to die before they were fully developed and I was beginning to worry that I would loose the plant. But then it started to produce new traps and it almost back to where it was when it arrived.
