Drosophyllum, commonly called dewy pine, is native to the dry, warm-temperate regions of Portugal and Southern Spain and grows very large, up to 3 feet across. In cultivation, the plant never gets that big since it's usually grown in pots where it becomes root bound. However, this is the type of plant that is extremely sensitive to root disturbance, so it essentially lives its entire life in the same pot. Plants in very large pots (12 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall) can live for 5 years or more. Plants in smaller pots (6 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall) might live for approximately 2-3 years.
This plant requires a great deal of sunlight throughout the year. During the summer months, grow the plant outdoors in the sunniest location possible. In fall and winter, bring the plant indoors in a sunny windowsill or under strong artificial lights.
